The Coastal Timber ADU: A Bright 600 Sq Ft Detached Guest House
Maximizing the Backyard with a Custom Ground-Up Build
Building a brand new, detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) from the ground up offers the ultimate flexibility in design and layout. For this San Diego project, the homeowners wanted to transform an underutilized portion of their backyard into a fully independent, 600-square-foot living space.
The footprint of 600 square feet is often considered the “sweet spot” for ADUs in Southern California. It provides ample space for a comfortable one-bedroom layout with a full kitchen and living room, while remaining compact enough to preserve valuable outdoor yard space and maintain an efficient construction timeline. The overarching design goal was to create an “organic modern” aesthetic—a space that feels airy, inviting, and deeply connected to its coastal surroundings.
For this specific La Jolla residence, the objective was to create a retreat within the home, prioritizing clean lines, dramatic contrasts, elegant finishes, and a highly functional layout that serves the daily routines of a modern family.
Ground-Up Construction:
The MEE Builders Advantage
Constructing a detached unit is equivalent to building a brand new home on a smaller scale. As a premier, MEE Builders oversaw the entire lifecycle of this project.
From pouring the new concrete foundation and raising the structural framing, to installing the new roof (as seen in our aerial drone progress photos) and integrating dedicated utility lines, our team handled all the heavy lifting. By managing the complexities of local zoning, engineering, and trenching for electrical and plumbing, we ensured a stress-free experience for the homeowners while delivering a turnkey, code-compliant property.
Organic Textures and Coastal Tones
What truly makes this ADU spectacular is the careful selection of interior finishes. Despite the compact footprint, the open-concept layout feels incredibly spacious due to the vaulted-style ceiling angles, strategic window placement, and a cohesive, light color palette.
The Modern Chef’s Kitchen:
The heart of this ADU is a fully equipped, L-shaped kitchen featuring beautiful light-oak flat-panel cabinetry. We paired the natural wood tones with crisp white quartz countertops, a modern subway tile backsplash, and high-end stainless steel appliances, proving that a guest house kitchen doesn’t have to compromise on functionality or luxury.
Spa-Inspired Bathroom Retreat:
The bathroom serves as a stunning focal point, featuring a custom walk-in shower wrapped in horizontally stacked teal/aqua glass subway tiles. A built-in shower niche and brushed brass fixtures add high-end convenience. To tie the home’s organic theme together, we installed a custom floating vanity with a slatted wood design, perfectly complementing the kitchen cabinetry.
Seamless Living Spaces:
Durable, light-toned luxury wood-plank flooring runs seamlessly throughout the living room, kitchen, and bedroom, visually expanding the square footage. Energy-efficient mini-split AC systems were installed to provide customizable climate control in every zone without the need for bulky ductwork.
A High-Value Addition to the Property
The finished exterior, clad in crisp white stucco with contrasting dark roof shingles and a gorgeous modern wooden entry door with glass panels, perfectly complements the main property. Whether utilized as a high-yield rental property, an elegant suite for aging parents, or a private home office, this 600 sq ft detached ADU represents the pinnacle of modern San Diego living.
